(Telecompaper) BBC iPlayer registered a record 1.94 billion requests for TV and radio programmes in 2011, driven by the growing popularity of internet-connected TVs, smartphones and tablets. Computers are still the most popular platform for iPlayer users, accounting for two thirds of total requests over the year. However, December saw a massive spike in usage through mobiles, tablets and connected TVs. In December, iPlayer users made 7 million programme requests through connected TVs, up over 1,000 percent year-on-year; with mobile phones and tablets recording 13 million and 10 million requests - up 163 percent and 596 percent respectively year-on-year. As a result, iPlayer registered a record 187 million requests across all platforms in December 2011, up 29 percent from December 2010.
